Spin Spin is a small design studio in Melbourne. It's one part freelance graphic design/illustration/photography (see the portfolio here) and one part small batch production of handcrafted items for the everyday, including sustainable screen printed textiles, paper goods and ceramics (see the shop here).
Design inspiration comes from everyday life and looking at things from a different angle. The aim is to develop a relationship with clients and work together to meet the brief, whether it's creating a logo, designing and illustrating an annual report or even taking team photos. Attention to detail is always a focus and picking spelling/punctuation errors and typos is an added bonus service.
Product inspiration comes from minimalist patterns and colour palettes, Japanese & Scandinavian design, nature, indie music, the weather, politics and so much more. Materials are chosen for their natural properties, beauty & quality but also have to be ethically produced and sustainable. Textile designs start out as drawings and paintings which are then digitised and transferred to a silkscreen. They are then hand screen printed in-house. Basecloth fabric includes linen, hemp & organic cotton. Ceramic pieces are made from porcelain (a super fine clay) and raku (the most gritty clay) and are hand formed into organic shapes and then hand painted.
Susan Fitzgerald is the designer and maker behind Spin Spin. She has a background in graphic design and a love of textiles, patterns and photography, and her work is organic and minimalist, showcasing colour, pattern and texture.
Susan studied media arts and graphic design before deciding to take some breaks from the computer and work with tactile objects. Experimentations began with making screen printed book covers for a class project and things took off from there.
In her spare time Susan also take photos of artists' workspaces for a project called Studio Space. She's also forever taking photos, which sometimes end up on the @hellosusanfitzgerald Instagram account.
