ABOUT THIS PRINT:

Milk bars, as they were known in Melbourne, were small local shops that sold milk, newspaper, mixed lollies, icypoles and maybe even milkshakes and pies if you were lucky. They were all over the suburbs when I was growing up in the 1980s and there always seemed to be one in walking or close riding distance, wherever you were. Sadly, very few still exist, due to changes in shopping habits and the rise in popularity of large supermarkets chains and shopping centres.

This illustration features a milk bar that existed near where I now live, but as it was 12 years ago, in 2006. I was in the area visiting a friend and as I would often do then (and still do now), I decided to stop and take photo of this milk bar in its fading glory, even though it was raining. The building's now painted over all in white (including the glass) and is currently used to store traffic signs, but will hopefully come back to life in a new form some day.
