ABOUT: Milk bars, as they were known in Melbourne, were small local shops that sold milk, newspaper, mixed lollies, icypoles and maybe even milkshakes and pies if you were lucky. They were all over the suburbs when I was growing up in the 1980s and there always seemed to be one in walking or close riding distance, wherever you were. Sadly, very few still exist, due to changes in shopping habits and the rise in popularity of large supermarkets chains and shopping centres.
This illustration features a milk bar that still exists right near where I now live. It is a bit run down and some of the tiles are falling off, but it's full of charm. I hope it's around for a long time to come!
